Well, I finally broke down and did a short run in spite of doctors orders. The result was one mile in 9:16, with an impressively high heart rate of 176. That is a pretty sad starting point after 3 months off, especially considering I may still need a while before my achilles is really ready for training again. I have actually run 2 miles faster than that single mile before. My goal is to run fast 10K, so converting that 9:16 mile to an equivalent 10K gives me an insanely slow 1:06:27. I'm actually not discouraged by that. I actually use that as motivation, and it is exciting to move through the steep part of the improvement curve.
I followed up my mile run with a wildly excessive weight lifting session at the gym. I hammered pretty hard simply because I was to get my but moving again. Unfortunately since this was my first gym workout in about 5 years, I am extremely sore now.
