After a day off, I went for another one mile run - this time in a blistering 8:52. My 9:16 was on a treadmill, with this one measured with a GPS on the road. It did feel a little easier, but I always feel better on the roads than on a treadmill. Doing my typical conversion to goal race distance, the 8:52 is the equivalent effort as a 1:03:35 10K. This is a 3 minute improvement in 2 days, but I would still need to cut 35 minutes off that to get into the Olympic trials!
I'm excited to do any running at all after all that time off, but technically I do not the doctors okay to run yet, and in fact the last thing he said was a tentative "6 more weeks off." Still, I can't imagine easy 1 or 2 mile runs are likely to cause a problem. They actually seem to help a bit, and although I can't say they are doing much for my conditioning, little runs on a regular basis should start getting me back into the feel of running again. I just need to stay really controlled and not push it. My achilles could likely continue to heal through 1 mile runs, but once I start doing a little running I really want to start hammering hilly 10 milers or track workouts. I'm sure I'm not ready for that yet.
