I'm back. Actually I was never completely gone from running, but just gone from this website. I did take things really light in 2006 and 2007 - not running much, and when I was I wasn't taking it very seriously. My achilles are both completely shot, which makes it tough and not real enjoyable to run. Things were so busy in my life in general, running to a major backseat.
One surprise was that I was still able to race pretty well without really training. I ran 9:37 for 3K on the track in July of 2007 off almost no running, and zero speedwork. Prior to that, I ran 2:45 at the Eugene Marathon to finish as first master - again off no speedwork, but slightly more mileage.
So here I am in 2008 trying to run through the achilles injuries again. I've done an aggressive rampup the last 3 weeks, with 13, 39, and 50 miles. So far not only has my body not blown apart, but I actually feel better. I might just do crash training for 8 or 9 weeks and try another marathon. My achilles seem to hold up better under a short period of crazy training than a long period of sustained and sensible running.
I'm also now race director for the Oregon Marathon Relay. Find 4 friends (2 if you are a walker) and sign up. If you don't have a team, and want to run email me, and I'll try to match you up with someone. If you aren't competing, email me anyway and I'll put you to work as a volunteer. I need about 20 people to help out.
