Archived Training for 2001 Santa Clarita Marathon - Sept to Nov 2001


The marathon didn't actually happen due to a bad hip injury about eight weeks prior to the race.  Things were shaping up to be a good battle between myself and Brian Spangenburg prior to the injury.  Brian not only stayed healthy, but pushed his training up to 140 miles per week.  Not surprisingly he won easily in 2:28 while I stood and watched, feeling particularly sorry for myself.  It would have taken a great race to be near Brian even if I had stayed healthy, but I could have easily finished second.

For the record, I did learn some things from this training (1) I can get in really good shape very quickly with consistent high mileage (2) doubles are great once you get used to them (3) for future marathons, I really need to start doing long runs earlier, and (4) I hate long runs.
